The gallbladder is a pear-shaped organ which is present beneath the right side of the liver. Collecting and concentrating bile (digestive liquid produced by liver) is the main purpose of the gall bladder.Bile is released from the gallbladder after digestion and eating. Bile moves through small tubular channels (bile ducts) into the small intestine.
Gallbladder problems are usually caused due to the growth of gallstones which are usually small and hard, gall stones are made up of cholesterol and bile salts that collects in gallbladder or in bile duct. Cost of Gall bladder removal is low compared to other general surgeries. It is undetermined why some people form gallstones but risk factors include being age over 40 years, female, prior pregnancy and being overweight.
There is no known means to avoid gallstones. These stones may stop the flow of bile out of the gallbladder, causing it to swell and causing in sharp abdominal pain, indigestion, vomiting and occasionally, fever. If the gallstone becomes an obstacle for the common bile duct, jaundice (a yellowing of the skin) can occur.
1. Patients usually experience faster recovery than open gallbladder surgery patients. 2. Most patients go home the same day of the surgery and enjoy a quicker return to normal activities.3. Rather than a five to seven inch incision, the operation requires only four small openings in the abdomen. 4. Patients usually have minimal post-operative pain.
