The surgical procedure to remove entire or a specific part of the colon is called Colectomy, it is called a partial colectomy. The procedure is also called as a bowel resection.
The colon is part of the body's digestive system. The digestive system cleans and processes nutrients (carbohydrates, vitamins, water, fats, proteins, and minerals.) from foods and helps transfer unwanted material out of the body. The digestive system is composed of the esophagus, stomach, and the small and large intestines.
The starting 6 feet of the big intestine are called the large bowel or colon. The last 6 inches are the rectum and the anal canal. The anal canal ends at the anus (the enterance of the large intestine to the outside of the body).
