Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL). The ligament, situated in the middle of the knee, that monitors the backward motion of the tibia (shin bone).

Medial collateral ligament (MCL). The ligament that gives firmness to the inner knee.

Lateral collateral ligament (LCL). The ligament that gives firmness to the outer knee.

Ligament Treatment and Injuries.

A torn ACL can cause the knee to become rickety and shaky which limits the full range of movement. This means that some movements will become very difficult to perform. While not all torn ACLs need surgery, the delay of a necessary option might worsen the condition.

PCL injuries are less occurred than ACL injuries, as this ligament is stronger and wider. Symptoms of such an injury might not start immediately, and pain might only be felt after some time of the incident.

MCL injuries do not usually need a surgery and can be treated by resting and gentle exercises.

LCL injuries are quite rare, as the other leg provides some protection against injuries on the deeper side of the knee.

In severe cases, surgery might be recommended although if there is an option for the best treatment. If surgery is suggested, procedures differ based on which ligament is damaged. ACL and PCL ligaments cannot be stitched back together effortlessly. The most performed surgery method is to clear the remains of the ligament and replace them with a tendon from another part of the leg. The graft tissue can come from the patient directly (autograft) or from a donor (allograft).
