I have gained a broad professional training in Plastic Surgery, General Surgery and Casualty and am confident in the diagnosis, assessment and initial management of acute surgical conditions in the casualty and inpatient settings. During Plastic Surgery training, I learnt the principles of soft tissue reconstructions in limb injuries and the management of hand injuries. I had the opportunity to perform procedures such as tendon and nerve repairs and split skin grafts independently andassist Consultants in flap reconstructions for open fractures. I gained experience in the use of operating loupe. As a Senior House Officer in General Surgery I assessed and managed patients with abdominal trauma and vascular emergencies presenting to the casualty.
Experience in Orthopaedic Surgery
I have 5.5 years of experience in orthopaedic surgery in the UK including 4 years as a Registrar. During this period, I have been exposed to a wide range of problems in Trauma, elective Orthopaedic and Ortho-geriatrics.
Trauma: I deal with Orthopaedic referrals from the casualty including major trauma and plan management in line with Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS®) guidelines for initial assessment and resuscitation. My training in Plastic Surgery and Accidents and Emergency has been of benefit, especially in the management of the multiply-injured. I am well-versed in the AO-ASIF principles, techniques and implants for management of fractures. I independently operate on common adult and children’s fractures involving the extremities. I plan to attend the AO Advanced Fracture fixation course in the next 12 months.
Arthroplasty: I routinely assess patients in orthopaedic clinics and plan operative management. I perform primary total knee replacements. I have assisted in revision hip and knee arthroplasties for infection, aseptic loosening, periprosthetic fractures, etc. I have also assisted in shoulder replacements. I conduct follow-up clinics for joint replacement patients.
SportsInjuries/ Arthroscopy: I independently perform diagnostic and therapeutic arthroscopy of the knee including chondroplasty and microfracture treatment. I have assisted in arthroscopy of the shoulder and ankle. I am confident in the assessment of patients with sports injuires and understand the principles of management of these conditions. I have performed ATFL and ACL reconstructions and assisted in assisted in PCL and PLCrecontructions.
Upper Limb/ Hand Surgery:I had a substantial exposure to management of hand trauma during my Plastic Surgery and Trauma Fellow posts (Selly Oak, Birmingham). I assess patients in specialist clinics and plan management working in close association with hand therapists. I independently operate on common hand injuries such as tendon rupture and crush injury and elective procedures such as carpal tunnel decompression and ganglion excision.
Foot and Ankle: I have recently completed 6 months posting with a Foot and Ankle surgeon.I have exposure to common foot and ankle problems, in additon to trauma. I participate in dedicated elective operating lists, and perform procedures such as ankle ligament reconstructions, bunionectomy, dorsal cheilectomy and fusion surgery.
Spine: During my training at Oxford, I was involved in the initial assessment and management of spinal injuries. I assisted in anterior and posterior approaches to the thoracolumbar spine for fractures, fusions and tumour surgery. I had some exposure to the surgical mangement of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.
Paediatric Orthopaedics: I have worked with consultants with a special interest in children’s Orthopaedics. I regularly assess new referrals to specialist paediatric clinics and plan management with consultant input. I have performed cannulated screw insertion for SUFE, removal of metal work and assisted in corrective surgery for pes planus and CTEV.
As part of routine duties in my unit, I supervise the junior doctors in the management of all inpatients. I undertake daily ward rounds and assess all patients posted for major/ minor elective surgery. I maintain an upto-date validated logbook of my surgical experience.
